Hnjótur Regional Museum, Iceland Westfjords

Breiðafjörður Bay
Breiðafjörður Bay is the second bigg-est bay in Iceland and it has num-erous islands, the largest of them being Flatey. For a long period of time Flatey was a very important trading place and harbour, it was the center of the large Breiðafjörður area. For centuries there has been a remarkable culture in Breiðafjörður, of high litteral culture and the trad-itional gathering of food and other resources. Local NORCE partners inside the Breiðafjörður area are:
  • Hnjótur Regional Museum in Patreksfjörður Bay
  • Museum of Local Resources at Reykhólar
  • Westfjords Development Agency
  • Association of Communities in Western Iceland
  • Reykhólahreppur Municipality
The partner´s aim is to bring to life the old ways of living in the Breiða-fjörður area, the traditional gathering of food and other resources, trav-elling by the old routes etc. Through nature the tourist should be able to get experience – education – chall-enge by really participating in the project´s outcomes; the workshops of boatbuilding and sailing, food festivals of traditional food in modern style and museum exhibits of the old faktor commercial system. Planned activities will be devided between three themes ; food, faktor and boats.
  • The Museum of Local Resources at Reykhólar will focus on the food, developing dishes made of local ingredients and a food festival.
  • The Norwegian House in Stykkishólmur will focus on the faktor culture, telling the story of trading and production.
  • The Museum at Hnjótur will focus on the boats, organizing a workshop in boatbuilding and developing activities. The museum is also the project leader in the Breiðafjörður area.
All three partners work jointly on marketing and co-operation between all those who
work in the tourism business in the area.
