Piteå Municipality
Piteå and its archipelago is situated in the very north of Bothnian Bay just south of the arctic circle.
Vast parts of the area is classified as a Natura 2000 area, due to its quite exceptional combination of uplift, the blend of salt- and sweet water, archaic stillness, shoal sea spots and shallow beaches. The archipelago of Piteå counts ten nature reserves.
At the whole, there are today no permanent settlements on the islands.
The existing settlement is constituted of old agricultural facilities, fishing cottages and various premises related to outdoor activities.
The project’s aim is to develop the archipelago of Piteå as a tourist attraction, without effecting the unique environment of the area. Emphasise is laid upon a better access to the archipelago; on enabling cruise liners to include Piteå in their route, as well as on marketing and information on a both local and international level.
Furthermore, the project shall strengthen the archipelago’s cultural heritage through the restoration of two navigation marks – “beacons” – from the 17’th century, and also through establishing cottages for accommodation, built in an ancient “fishing style”.
The accumulated know-how will be disseminated through partner meetings, in which the various partners can benefit from – and contribute to – the collected experience and competence.
