Reykir Regional Museum
The Reykir Museum expertise is in Coastal culture and farming in Hunafloi in NW-Iceland until 1920. Boats, shark hunting and sustainable use of natural resources being the main theme. History and Saga, museum and exhibition development.
The Museum Reykir is working with tourist development in the Hunaflói Bay area, creating a project about the special coastal culture. The museum will be the center for the project and will have large exhibition about the special coastal culture of the area. The museum will work with authorities, tourism offices, companies and others to increase and develop the tourism industry in the area. The aim will be on natural resources and sustainable use, as it has been through the ages. Also to give all the historical sites in the area, which have connections to the coastal culture, a new meaning and a role for the people and tourism industry. Seminars will be held. Boats are large part of the museums exhibitions. Exhibition development will also be part of the work.
Land and sea have much to give. The coast gives special material for food and that tradition is to be presented and used for developing new menu at local restaurants. Also to motivate chefs to use this material. Special festival is to be developed. The sea gives also driftwood, which that have been used for centuries for building boats, houses and all kind of objects. The driftwood can be used for making souvenirs, use of sealskin and eiderdown is also common.
