Trondarnes Distriksmuseum

Trondarnes Distriktsmuseum (TD) is a regional museum for the municipa-lities Bjarkøy, Harstad, Kvæfjord and Skånland. TD is situated at Trondenes Historical Senter on the Trondenes peninsula near the town of Harstad. The Trondenes peninsula has been a historical center of North-Norwegian cultur since the vikingarea.

The NORCE project however, will be concentrated to Hemmestad brygge in Kvæfjord. This is an old trading house, that were the trading center in Kvæfjord in the 19th century. The wharf area had numerous buildings bye the sea: warfhouses with store and postoffice, boathouses, blacksmith– house, house for drying fishing eqipment, licuerceller.

The tradinghouse had good communication possibilites, first with their own ships like the Norwegian type of sailship “jekt” wich sailed to Bergen and also northeast to Russia, and the traditional fishingboats, “nordlandsbåt”. In the second half of the 19th century, steemships started routes from south to northern Norway and made it easy to send, and order goods to and from southern Norway and Europe. Around 1900 the position as trading center declined and the activity fell down to running the store and shipsexpedition. This stopped around 1963.

Today Hemmestad brygge is a museum and a center for coastal culture. It is an arena for the museum, the local Coastlilfe organisation and also a schoolarena for culture, history and maritime training. It is also used for representation by the municipality.

With the NORCE project, Hemmestad brygge will get a further development as a coastal meetingplace and tourist attraction based on activity tourism by:
  • better the landing conditions for use of traditional boats
  • building of a traditional wodden boat
  • present a guidebook for coastal herritage destinations
  • present a cookbook based on local resources combined with North-Atlantics
  • develop “food-hampers”: a taste of the local area.
